Il Melograno

Il Melograno is a fantastic family-run Italian restaurant in Hell's Kitchen. It's one of the more authentic local Italian joints I've been to in the city. In fact, the owner (Alberto Tartari) used to run a restaurant in Italy before opening Il Melograno in NYC. The staff is friendly, the food is fresh (pasta is made fresh, too), the prices are just right and the setting is pleasantly casual.

Upon sitting down, we were served some delicious fresh bread with a concoction of olive oil and sun-dried tomatoes with a hint of garlic. It was tangy, tart and mildly sweet. It was nice to have something different from the typical butter or plain olive oil. This disappeared in no time.

What's great about Il Melograno is that they have some awesome daily specials. I hear the lunch specials are great, but I went for dinner... and thought the dinner specials were great too. I ordered the tagliatelle pasta with lobster in a light tomato sauce ($21, if I remember correctly). I expected to get pasta with a creamy tomato sauce and little pieces of lobster. I was pleasantly surprised when I got this:

Beautiful pasta with lobster in the whole (chopped, which made it easier for me), with literally a light tomato sauce with no cream, garnished with mint. Who needs all that cream anyway? It was a light dish, but so satisfying and delicious. The lobster quality was excellent and I savored every bite.

For a low key, delicious and authentic Italian meal, I highly recommend Il Melograno. Can't wait to return and try more dishes.

Eatery

For a no frills Saturday or Sunday brunch, Eatery is the way to go. I've eaten there a couple times over the last few years and have never had a bad experience (mostly for brunch, once for dinner). If you go between 12pm-2pm on a Sunday, there will most likely be a wait, but worth it. Eatery is one of the few restaurants in NYC that actually tells you the truth about wait times! If they say 15-20 minutes, believe them.

To start the meal, Eatery serves complimentary mini corn muffins. These muffins are sprinkled with powered sugar and are really satisfying, especially if you're starving for your first meal of the day.

For the main meal, I shared two dishes with my friend. We got the "e-benne" poached eggs, which was served on a vegetable potato cake with roasted chili hollandaise ($10.95). The vegetable potato cake was basically a crispy latka with more spiciness. One of my favorite moments of this dish was when I cut through the egg and the runny yoke coated the potato cake. Delicious.

We also got one of the specials of the day, which was buttermilk pancakes (~$12) served with chocolate ice cream, candied bananas and blueberry compote. It was very decadent and I treated it like dessert to the egg dish. Despite the great textures and flavors, we couldn't finish it because there was too much sweetness.

Eatery is dependable and consistent. Check it out, it's located on 53rd Street and 9th Avenue.
